The southwest is China's most biodiverse and most ethnically varied quarter — 25 of the country's 55 recognised minority peoples live in Yunnan and Guizhou alone. Sichuan gives you pandas and numbing peppercorns, Yunnan gives you snow peaks and old towns, Guizhou gives you waterfalls and silver-clad Miao villages, and Chongqing gives you a cyberpunk city stacked on cliffs above two rivers.

Provinces & regions: Sichuan · Chongqing · Yunnan · Guizhou · Tibet

Best time to go: March to June and September to November. Yunnan is pleasant year-round.
